LOCAL RESPONSES TO FEDERAL IMMIGRATON ENFORCEMENT
Thursday, August 21, Noon

President Trump’s June 15, 2025, post on Truth Social continued his campaign promise to deport a record number of immigrants. He wrote, “Our Nation’s ICE Officers have shown incredible strength, determination, and courage as they facilitate a very important mission, the largest Mass Deportation Operation of Illegal Aliens in History.” How should local elected officials and citizens respond? Franklin County Commissioners passed a resolution declaring that Franklin County would not be a "sanctuary jurisdiction." Other local jurisdictions may soon consider similar resolutions.

Benton County Commissioner Jerome Delvin has floated the idea of contracting with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to use unoccupied space in the Benton County jail for detainees but recently learned the Keep Washington Working Act may allow it only in limited situations. He will discuss his experience as a police officer, state legislator and now county commissioner on immigration issues. Sonee Wilson, board president of the Tri-Cities Immigrant Coalition, will share actions the Coalition is taking to support migrants and ensue their rights are protected, and fellow Coalition member Carol Larkin will discuss the Keep Washington Working Act and the importance of migrants to our community.
